Some quatrains belong to Nostradamus past, but it seems that they should explain the future. The prophet seems to think that history repeats itself according to astrological cycles. Present times may replicate the antique Roman model according to a long cycle of about 2000 years. Other shorter cycles will lead to repeat the crusades and religious wars (cycles of about 400 years). The basic short-term cycle is 18 years and 6 months long, more or less.
The seer starts his astrological cycle at the year BC 4092 or BC 5477, depending on which of the two chronologies he lists in the Letter to Henry he uses. The prophecies end in the year 3797, 2 years before the end of the Century. Most historians consider that Christ was born between the year BC 7 and BC 3, and Nostradamus may have considered that in his chronologies.
