THE GREAT NEW CITY
The following quatrain is one of the most famous and commented of the Nostradamus
Centuries. Many interpreters understand it to mean that the seer foretold
a destruction of a great new city in a surprise air attack.

A few coordinates are potentially concerned:
New York longitude 73°55 - latitude 40°44, Barcelona 2°7 - 42°,
North Brazil 40° - 5°, Ivory Coast 5° - 40° , Rome 12°5
- 41°54, Naples, 14°16 - 40°51, Venice 12°20 - 45°20,
the Vesuvio 14°26 - 40°49 , the Etna 15° - 37°45…New
Delhi 77° - 28°1, Paris 2°20 - 48°52, Geneva 6°9 - 44°13.

Nostradamus uses two distinct spellings for
Normans, and each may designate a separate people. But it may also provide
some separate clues that point to the same population. Normand usually refers
to the Vikings, their Normandy descendants, the Scandinavians and sometimes
the English. But all these Normands reside above the 50th parallel while the
seer mentions coordinates below that. "Norman" without a “d” in the above quatrain rather refers to men from the North located at the 45th
parallel, thus most certainly the North American people. This constitutes
the widespread theory with respect to the quatrain 6-97. But to ascertain its validity,
all realistic alternatives should be investigated.
A few interpreters, like the popular Jean
de Fontbrune, contend that the quatrain deals with Geneva. But the Swiss city
is located at latitude 46°13 and not 45 or 40°5. Only one major “new” city matches this coordinate in the northern and southern hemispheres, it
is New York, and it should be feared that the explosion will take place close
by the great new city of lights. This theory is upheld by Dolores Canon among
many others. She contends to have obtained this information from the seer
himself by regressing through hypnosis in the past, making it possible for
her to have a conversation with him.
But there is a whole different way to understand
the term 5 & 40. By Nostradamus’ usual standards, this layout refers
to either 45, or 5 and 40 or 540; there is no way to tell. And there are also
several ways to understand 540 degrees. The first would be a position 80°
away from the point of observation (540° minus a 360° full turn).
This would bring the attention on the longitude that splits India in the middle
right through New Delhi. Another interpretation could be that it takes the
earth 1 day and 9 hours more or less to accomplish a 540° turn. It would
mean that the sky will be set on fire all around the planet for 1 and a half
days or that the earth will be destroyed one and a half times.
The longitude could refer to a system that
has changed since 1555. Research along this line establishes that the today’s
international standard that sets Greenwich at a 0 longitude was opted in 1884,
but it already existed among other systems during the 16th Century explorations.
And throughout history, each country and civilization had its own point of
longitude 0: Paris, Babylon, Rome, Madrid…and so on. It is probable
that Nostradamus used the system of his time and country. Should Paris be
the point 0, then Rome, which is today at a longitude of 12.9, would be located
at 9° and a latitude of 41.9°. So, 40° would be just a little
South of this point towards Naples, precisely at the city of Pompei and the
volcano Vesuvio.
And there is still another way to interpret
this coordinate. It would mean 5° from “where I stand” at
a latitude of 40° as the seer took a diligent care to explain that he
wrote in Salon de Provence in Southern France, which is at a longitude of
5.4°. A distance of five degrees off that point at a latitude of 40° takes to Madrid on the east side and on the other, just above Naples some
30 miles out into the sea.
At this point, the analysis is stuck in the
middle of several possibilities. Fortunately, Nostradamus described a “New
City” in five more quatrains and a “Great” or “Big”
city in a total of nine more. Some of them seem to relate to the events of
the 6-97. Two in particular give some precious indications about a “caved
mount”, gardens, a “new river” and a reference to what could
be an earthquake or a volcano.

On the Spanish side, no link with the above
quatrains really stands out. But close by Rome, the clues are numerous. Right
at a 40° latitude below Rome is “Monte Cavo” meaning “Caved
Mount”. The Rome area stands right on top of the Mediterranean seismic
breach that comes up from Algeria where very recent earthquakes have caused
thousands of deaths. It then moves on from there eastward, splits between
the Balkans and Greece and on to turkey where it meets the Asian plate.

History is full of evidence of earthquakes taking place
in the Rome area. The ancient city was completely destroyed during the 1rst
Century and again to a lesser extent during the 4th. The mythic city of Pompeii
is located at a latitude of 40°5 and a longitude of 14°26, which is
9° away from Salon de Provence right at the bottom of Mount Vesuvio. The
seer impassioned with Roman history was very likely looking at this area while
composing his poetry, and it is one of the two great rocks at war that he
refers to, the other being the Etna in Sicily.
Artherusa seems to be a river in the text.
It also names a rose found at an altitude of 500 meters that has a particular
meaning in China. But it first stands for an ancient mythic Greek nymph linked
to Artemis, the goddess of nature and delights. She once bathed in a river
where a “God river”, Artheus, fell in love with her beauty and
attempted to seduce her. She refused him, and was pushed away to Ortygia,
an island close by Syracuse (Sicily). Artemis changed her into a spring fountain
to save her. The Nostradamus river should be found nearby the fountain, which
is right on top of the seismic breach close by the volcano Etna.
Studying further, the world’s garden
could refer to the 3rd world marvel, which were the suspended gardens of Babylon
built by Nebuchenazzar II for his wife. But Babylon is located way south and
has nothing to do with a 40° latitude. Another place could be the Vatican
garden. A bishop explained during a TV interview at a Vatican ceremony that
each country in the world is represented there by a different parterre and
tree. Unfortunately, the Vatican tourist guides do not confirm this story.
But there remains a major mystery. Why would
Rome or any of that area cities be referred to as “new”, for they
are the most ancient ones in the world? A better candidate in the 16th Century
would have been Venice. It was founded around 1300 and had over 100 000 inhabitants
when the seer wrote his book. No matter what the context being considered,
no “new city” can be found in the Rome area. But looking closely
at the quatrain 6-97, Nostradamus does not write that the sparkle will happen
in the new city, but that it will approach it. In fact, he describes the itinerary
of the disaster that will start at 5° east of where he writes at a 40° latitude and stop close by the new city of Venice. The following quatrain
refers to Plazza San Marco in Venice:

Still another quatrain mentions Mantua and
Cremona along with the “new city”. Both are Italian cities and
dynasties linked in the text to a sacred bird:

After victory he pardons his captives.
At Cremona and Mantua great hardships will be suffered.

Mantua and Cremone were a part of the pontifical
states when they were initially constituted in the 8th Century as a result
of the French king Pepin Le Bref victories and his gift to the Pope. There
is another potential meaning to Mantua: An Egyptian god with a falcon head.
Bouchis was his sacred Taurus named “soul of Re”, Re being the
solar god. But Cremona definitely takes the reader back to the Pontifical
states. In the 16th Century, Cremona had been lost and only Mantua remained
under the church control. In fact, the events depicted in quatrain 1-24 do
not seem to be related to the 6-97, but they give clues to understand the
disaster that will not be confined to just one place, and that will extend
even further East, to Venice.
There was no knowledge of a seismic breach
that extends from Africa to Rome and on to the Middle East back in the 16th
Century. But Nostradamus definitely refers to it in a total of at least 40
quatrains. And this could be the reason that will force the Great Pontiff,
probably meaning the pope, to change his residence as described in quatrain
II-41.

Conclusion
As a rule, there is always a hidden meaning
to the quatrains.
The traditional interpretation states that
the quatrain 6-97 deals with New York on the basis that it is a great new
city located at a latitude of 45°. But the Nostradamus writings give hints
on places near Rome, Southern Italy, Southern France, Northern Spain as well
as Mantua, Cremona, Venice, the Greek Islands, Patras in particular, Turkey
and Israel.
This new interpretation is in line with Fatima’s
3rd Secret that foretells the destruction of Rome with thousands of corpses
laying on the ground. It is also compatible with the Bible that goes even
further than this by prophesizing the destruction of Jerusalem in a clash
between the armies of the North and South. The series of earthquakes would
be one of the 7 plagues contained in the cups of the wrath of God as revealed
in the book of Revelatons.
Nostradamus gives a time for the events.
They are to take place on the day of the death of the “very old Pontiff”
at Easter, which he strangely situates at the very end of April and beginning
of May. Indeed, the calendar has changed in 1582. The new Gregorian calendar
first instated in 1582 dropped 10 days at once in order to catch back with
the 0.0078 days that had been lost year after year under the Julian (Caesar)
standard. The Gregorian Easter date of April 11 2004 corresponds to the Julian
April 27. Finally, he explains that the new pope, the "great and maybe
the last one", will be instated on the very same day the very old one
will decease. And this must mean that the death will have long been foreseen,
thus granting to the church dignitaries the necessary time to select a new
one. On November 17 2003, it is public knowledge that John Paul II has already
prepared his succession.

But should we want to stick to the old story,
this is going to happen when the Normans will be provoked at the Great New
City! And we should bear in mind that the Normans are people from the North
that come from the sea, more likely to have been the Celts in Roman times
and the Americans nowadays than Indians from New Delhi. And besides, only
the USA and Russia maintain a retaliation capacity that enables to destroy
one and a half time the planet.
The wind of Aquilon, which means a wind from
the sea, is employed at least 20 times in the Centuries to name a mysterious
people. It could mean the same as Normans, a people that come from the sea
and the North. This will be thoroughly checked in a coming article.
Nevertheless, it should be kept in mind that “Norman”, seemingly standing for the American people at the 45th
parallel, is an anagram of “Roman”. But it is also a fact that
the center of the world was displaced from Rome to New York during the 20th
Century.
