The Times and Regions here pertain to the geography of America, Europe and the Occidental people, including the former British colonies. The reference quatrains in the left menu all contain some identifiable names of countries, regions, cities, mountains, rivers and people as well as some unidentified places like the Great New City. Their careful study clarifies the themes of the "Rulers and Power" and "History before and after 1555". It also comforts some elements of the seer's biography.
To analysize the geographical places is essential to make sense of the Centuries. It enables to identify the seer's centers of interest. It locates the places of the future actions. It could help to situate the gold and silver treasure still to be found. Moreover, it structures the writing in some coherent themes, Nostradamus having shuffled his quatrains before publishing.
Globally, the Centuries refer to Europe more than any other region in the world. France holds the first place followed by Italy. This is explained by the fact that the seer lived in Southern France during the era of Rebirth.
Within France, some peculiar places draw the author's attention. He refers extensively to mountains and rivers like the Alps, the Pyrenees, the Loire and the Rhone. He mentions a number of small towns located in the Cathare region at the French-Spanish border. This people had a dualistic understanding of the Bible during the Middle Ages, and the pope ordered a crusade, known as the "Albigensian Crusade", to exterminate them and institute his only authorized religion. Other villages and towns belong to the Protestant Cevennes, to its neighboring Larzac, the land of the Catholic church military order, and to the very Catholic Dauphinois that remained a kingdom of its own until the 19th Century. The writing of the Centuries corresponds to a time of religious unrest in France.
Italy occupies the next important place. Nostradamus traveled there quite often during the times of wars against the Spanish emperor Charles V. Some interpreters contend that the seer acted as a spy. The region of Provence where he lived was at one point seized by the Spanish army and the emperor led his troops right by the seer's doorstep on his way to the Italic war. But the real reason for the author's repeated trips to Italy in the midst of Rebirth is that the Roman Empire history fascinated him, just like most intellectuals of his time. Mount Cenis, Genoa, and Turin, to which he refers extensively, stand on the seer's itinerary to Rome, Naples and Venice. This is investigated in details in the theme of "History before 1555".
Besides France and Italy, there are many references to the Rhine and Danube. Many interprets associate these quatrains to the Napoleonic wars. This theme is dealt with in "History after 1555" from the top menu.
Despite many interpreters’ contentions, the USA does not hold the first place in the Centuries, although this should have been the case if the seer had cared to predict the 20th Century events accurately. Nevertheless, the USA did not exist yet in the 16th Century and some unnamed mysterious places like the "New City", the Aquilon (meaning a wind from the sea) and the Celts may refer to America. Many interpreters understand that the "Great New City" located at 40 and 5 degrees of latitude to be destroyed in the future refers to New York. The medium Dolores Cannon explains that these are the precise coordinates of a future nuclear explosion. The pros and cons of this thesis are reviewed in the article "The Great New City" from the left menu.
Enjoy.
